Cantor Sam Smith pede para ser tratado por pronomes de gênero neutro

O cantor britânico Sam Smith pediu nesta sexta-feira para ser referido sempre nos pronomes de gênero neutro da língua inglesa "they" e "them", citando uma "uma vida inteira de guerra com meu gênero". O músico vencedor do Grammy, de 27 anos, fez o anúncio em um post no Instagram entitulado "Meus pronomes são they/them". 

"Eu decidi me aceitar como sou, por dentro e por fora. Eu estou muito feliz e me sinto privilegiado por estar cercado de pessoas que me apoiam nesta decisão, mas estou muito nervoso para anunciar isso porque eu ligo muito para o que as pessoas pensam", disse o cantor de "Stay with Me".

Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ❤ after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out. I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it! I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you. P.s. I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary but I can’t wait for the day that I am. So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open. O post de Smith no Instagram rapidamente atingiu mais de 400 mil likes. Smith disse que é cedo demais para explicar "o que significa ser não-binário", mas o anúncio acontece seis meses depois que o cantor se anunciou nas redes sociais como "nem masculino nem feminino", mas flutuando "em algum lugar no meio". 

Smith conquistou quatro prêmios do Grammy em 2015 após lançar seu álbum de estreia "In the Lonely Hour", sobre amor não correspondido. O cantor se junta a um número crescente de pessoas que desejam ser tratadas pelos pronomes neutros, incluindo Jill Soloway, a criadora da série de temática transgênero "Transparent", e a atriz da série "Billions" Asia Kate Dillon.
